The August Wilson Monologue Competition features high school students from across the city of Chicago, who have been selected as finalists in both performance and design. 21 students will take to the Owen stage to perform monologues from August Wilson’s Century Cycle; a collection of 10 plays that covers African-American history in the 20th century. The remaining finalists will present designs based on these monologues.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the monologue competition will receive a cash prize in the amount of $1000, $500, and $250, respectively. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the design competition will receive a cash prize in the amount of $500, $250, and $100 respectively.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION
In its 13th year, the August Wilson monologue competition serves over 300 students annually through our outreach programs and competition, master classes, and gives students access to college scholarships. Open to Chicago area high school students, the competition gives students an opportunity to explore and share the richness of August Wilson’s Century Cycle and to expose a new generation of creative minds to the life’s work and artistic legacy of this seminal American playwright.
