Jackson Park in Chicago was the epicenter of House music on Saturday, July 13, as it hosted the 2024 Chosen Few DJs Picnic and Festival. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd of die-hard fans, transforming the park into what many consider Chicago’s ‘sacred ground for House music purists.’ This year’s festival featured a stellar lineup including NYC’s Timmy Regisford, Joe Claussell, Jihad Muhammad, Sundance, Neil Pierce, Mel Gentry, and Greg Gray. Performances by Chicago legend Fast Eddie, Julie McKnight, and the Jasper Street Company added to the excitement.
Alongside these guest performers, the DJ members of the Chosen Few showcased their talents. Wayne Williams, Tony Hatchett, Andre Hatchett, Alan King, Terry Hunter, and Mike Dunn kept the crowd dancing all day. Despite the absence of House pioneer Jesse Saunders, who is recovering from a stroke, his influence was felt throughout the event. This year marks the 40th anniversary of House music, a milestone commemorated by many, as Saunders and Vince Lawrence produced the first commercially released House record, “On and On,” in 1984.
The festival was a vibrant display of community and culture. The hot and steamy weather didn’t deter the attendees, who danced with colorful hand cloths covering their heads and paper fans distributed by corporate partners. The atmosphere was electric, amplified by celebrity sightings. Chicago native Deon Cole, comedian and actor-turned-DJ, was seen performing the Holy Ghost dance onstage, while actress Lisa Raye and rapper/actress Ta’Rhonda Jones mingled with fans, taking photos and enjoying the music.
Chicago’s claim as the birthplace of House music was evident. This summer has seen numerous House music festivals, picnics, and reunion tours, each celebrating the culture in unique ways. Originating in the clubs of the early 1970s, House music evolved through the disco era, blending Soul, Funk, Latin, Gospel, and Punk influences into a distinct genre.
The Chosen Few DJs have been instrumental in preserving and advancing House music’s legacy. Their annual festival is a testament to the enduring appeal and diversity of House music, honoring its roots while embracing modern influences. As we celebrate the annual gathering, we recognize the global phenomenon House music has become, thanks to the dedication and passion of the Chosen Few and their followers.
